Night Lights

Yesterday we had dinner al fresco by a historical watch tower and watched the fireworks of the St. Julians feast (or festas as they're called). Festas are the height of summer. Each town or village that has a parish celebrates their feast which is a weekend of fireworks, a procession and street vendors selling everything from food to toys.

Yesterday's festa was that of our neighbouring town and the fireworks are set off from a barge just outside the bays so we had a very good view of all the lights in the sky. And the noise that goes with them...

Thankfully the evenings just got a bit cooler too.

I hope that you're all having a wonderful weekend.

Swapping Seasons

Living on a hot island means that you tend to take the sun for granted because it's pretty much there almost all of the time. And, to further complicate matters, you get bored of it very quickly as is happening to me now. It's been very hot for a while now and it's just reaching the brink of being 'too much'.

I'm longing to go on holiday to a place where it's slightly cold; where a jacket is needed and where a hot chocolate hits just the spot to warm you up.

I've probably got to wait another 2-3 months before that happens here, only once it does Sod's Law will be that I'll miss the sun and scenes like this.

Blue or Pink?

The lovely Maria Fe over at Layers of Meaning is going to have the most wonderful party to reveal the gender of her unborn child!

They've called it a Gender Reveal Party and the inside of the cake is going to be either pink or blue icing so the guests will only fing out once the cake is cut! The're also being asked to wear either pink or blue to cast their vote as to what they think the baby is - it would be great to see lots of men wearing pink!

Isn't this just a charming idea?

Things I Don't Like

Following on the post of Things I Like, here are a few things that I don't like...
  • Mushrooms - I know that many people love them; hey, there's even a pizza adorned by just them but I just don't like the smell of them and the taste of them. Moreover, they're a fungus!
  • Teenage Angst - I'm not referring to stressed out students the day of their final exams - that is perfectly understandable and possibly healthy. It's the 'my life is shit and no one loves me' drama that comes from teenagers who live in large houses, pay no rent/bills, get an allowance and yet, still, complain. And then we wonder why our youth are screwed up.
  • Facebook Drama - Yes, there is such a thing as TMI... even on Facebook.
  • Male waxing - I like a well groomed man, but waxing everywhere is taking it a tad too far. Definitely.
  • Cruelty to animals - This may sound obvious and more serious than the other things listed but it's horrifying to still see people being absolutely inhumane towards their pets despite supposedly knowing better. (this happened today)
  • Rikotta cheese - Another food hate - yes this is hate! Hate the sight of it, the taste of it, even having somebody next to me eating it. There's nothing worse for me.
  • People who don't use their indicators - As I once said 'indicators are standard with every car, not an extra - USE THEM!' This is a very common trait in Malta *sigh*
There are other things... I'm not that placid :) However, I think it's best to stop here for now otherwise I'll be dwelling on negative things too much.

What's your pet hate?

Who Shall I Follow?

Since I prettified my blog I decided to go through my blog list (entitled Reading List to the left) because I noticed that some blogs just weren't being updated and sure enough, they weren't even found!

So I cleaned that up too. And this is where you come in. Can you recommend a blogger whom I should follow?

I enjoy people who speak about their lives and post photos and share links. I don't want people who complain about everything; who are pessimists or downers and people who think that the world is against them and life is so unfair. Those people can stay away.

Makeover time

I've given my blog another makeover. I know that the last one wasn't too long ago, however, I felt that it still wasn't right. I'm much happier with this one :)

I'm not sure whether it's still 100% done - might add some tabs or social media buttons... will see.

I wanted to get the side columns so I've changed that. I also made a much nicer header that has colours and a bit of me in all the pictures. I love colours; my favourite flowers and my love for shoes.

Speaking about loving colours, I actually bought myself a set of small colouring pencils from Accessorize yesterday that have a coloured 'diamond' at the top of each one determining the colour - adorable! A totally whimsical buy but I love them.

Now, if you're reading this via RSS feed then you're not seeing the new look (pity!) However, please do head over to All About G and let me know what you think. It'll only take you 3 minutes and 42 seconds ;)

Things I Like

I made this at Wordle and you can add any words that you like so I decided to start off with Things I Like. You can add up to 150 words, change the font, colour, layout, word direction - great fun! Note that if you have two words for one term you'll need to hyphenate them otherwise the programme will read them as two separate words.

Skimming the Waves

We spent a glorious couple of hours on my friend's RIB (rigid inflatable boat) a couple of days ago. It was a very impromptu decision taken just that morning, so we met after work when the sun was high enough to be warm, but had set enough to not be scorching hot.

We made our way out of the harbour and into the open sea where she pushed the throttle and we were bouncing across the waves. The first bay we stopped at wasn't ideal for swimming so we decided to move on to the next one, which thankfully was lovely and clear. We dropped the anchor and all jumped in. Funnily enough both boys don't enjoy swimming so they didn't spend too long in the sea; us girls were happy to bob around chatting.

After a while we climbed aboard and chilled till just before sunset and then made our way back to the marina.

We were only out for a couple of hours but it was enough to relax and have a laugh, especially because it was so spontaneous. Which is a good reason why your bikini waxing appointments should be frequent in summer!

Of hungry lions and naughty kids

This morning I saw a note on Alison's Facebook page that took me back many, many years to a time when I was about 11 and English class was taught by a very good, but very strict, teacher.

Literature was always part of the curriculum and that included poetry and this was one of the most memorable poems that we had studied. Quite a horrific subject; however, what impresses me the most is the rather blase (though "concerned") attitude of the parents. Just brilliant!

So here you have it... Jim who ran away from his Nurse and was eaten by a Lion

There was a Boy whose name was Jim;
His Friends were very good to him.
They gave him Tea, and Cakes, and Jam,
And slices of delicious Ham,
And Chocolate with pink inside
And little Tricycles to ride,
And read him Stories through and through,
And even took him to the Zoo--
But there it was the dreadful Fate
Befell him, which I now relate.

You know--or at least you ought to know,
For I have often told you so--
That Children never are allowed
To leave their Nurses in a Crowd;
Now this was Jim's especial Foible,
He ran away when he was able,
And on this inauspicious day
He slipped his hand and ran away!

He hadn't gone a yard when--Bang!
With open Jaws, a lion sprang,
And hungrily began to eat
The Boy: beginning at his feet.
Now, just imagine how it feels
When first your toes and then your heels,
And then by gradual degrees,
Your shins and ankles, calves and knees,
Are slowly eaten, bit by bit.
No wonder Jim detested it!
No wonder that he shouted ``Hi!''

The Honest Keeper heard his cry,
Though very fat he almost ran
To help the little gentleman.
``Ponto!'' he ordered as he came
(For Ponto was the Lion's name),
``Ponto!'' he cried, with angry Frown,
``Let go, Sir! Down, Sir! Put it down!''
The Lion made a sudden stop,
He let the Dainty Morsel drop,
And slunk reluctant to his Cage,
Snarling with Disappointed Rage.
But when he bent him over Jim,
The Honest Keeper's Eyes were dim.
The Lion having reached his Head,
The Miserable Boy was dead!

When Nurse informed his Parents, they
Were more Concerned than I can say:--
His Mother, as She dried her eyes,
Said, ``Well--it gives me no surprise,
He would not do as he was told!''
His Father, who was self-controlled,
Bade all the children round attend
To James's miserable end,
And always keep a-hold of Nurse
For fear of finding something worse.

Theatre Life

I've been involved in theatre productions for a while now and although I haven't had any major roles I enjoy just being part of a production.

The end of summer brings theatre season in with it and I've got two productions coming up - one in which I'm performing, the other in which I've got a backstage role as ASM  (Assistant Stage Manager).

The first play is a One Act Play and forms part of the annual One Act Play Festival. I'm cast in a comedy which should be a good laugh. We've already had a read-through of the script and it's got a lot of potential. That's going to be performed towards the end of September and I'm looking forward to it.

The other play is a murder mystery, again a comedy, being performed at the Manoel Theatre over Halloween weekend. Another great script and an equally great cast which should draw the crowds.

I'm looking forward to my 2 months of theatre life.

Etsy Beauties

I bought off Etsy for the first time :) I had some funds in my Paypal account and thought that I should put them to good use and treat myself. So I did. I bought pretty things and am very excited while waiting for them to arrive. Loveliness ahead...

Content for Success

I spent a few happy hours today dedicating time to my website making sure that it's up-to-date with all my articles and updating any widgets, etc. I also decided to change the colour scheme from the previous dark red to this dark autumn brown. Ideally I'd want a lighter colour; however, it seems that the theme I use only supports red, brown and black so I might ask someone to take a look at it but in the meantime I'm going with the earth tones. Check it out at www.contentforsuccess.com.
