It's not me, it's you

During a coffee (or cigarette if you're that way inclined) break at uni today I bumped into an old friend of mine whom I haven't seen in a while, so we decided to meet later for a(nother) coffee. Lecture done and over with I made my way to the canteen, met said friend, got our respecive caffeine fixes and went to sit under a tree (to shelter from the rain!) Whilst chatting about this, that and the other, the issue of me being an internet addict came up and therefore the subject of blogs.

This is the third site that I am using to recount my thoughts and affairs, but my first blog. I've dumped my diary, and am now two-timing my journal with a blog.

"What do you write about?"

Yeesh, I don't know. Stuff ay! Uni stuff, thoughts, opinions, day-to-day stuff, current affairs (if I find them interesting)... you know... stuff!

"Politics?"

NO! I don't write about politics. I leave that to the people who enjoy it. And don't give me any heritage, family, in-your-blood crap. I don't do politics.

"Ok."

It's important to know when to drop a subject :) And then you can always rely on talking about sex... it's so much more juicy (no pun intended) anyway.

Death is our only guarantee in life

An SMS from Amida this morning jolted me out of the beautiful lust that I was feeling for my bed. I was contemplating spending all morning there... but she reminded me that we were meeting at uni at 10:00 to discuss Wednesday's presentation *sigh*. So I dutifully went to uni, we discussed the presentation (still unsure about how it's going to turn out but we'll hope for the best), and were done by 11:00. Whilst at uni I was interviewed by some students working on a project and they asked me about death! So I gave them my views on it... I hope I wasn't too morbid. I also went to the Finance Office to pay for my course (first time up those stairs!) and the guy at the desk says "I assume you're paying as a foreign student right?" you assume wrong. I looked at him rather surprised and said "Er... No!" He apologised *lol* That done I finally gave in my credit sheet to the secretaries's office and told them that at least I wouldn't need to see them for a while now!

Since it was such good weather (hot is more appropriate a term I'd say), I took K to be washed cos she really needed it poor babe. And now she's all bright and shiny and black :) Then I was driving through Sliema and saw a parking place so I just had to stop. And a good thing I did too cos I found a bargain - really cool, sexy red boots. And I also bought much needed socks! Amazing how socks tend to disintegrate over summer isn't it?!

I did, however, have a rather productive afternoon getting chores done and getting on with some reading... along with cups of tea. Now I really need to get it into my head that I have work tomorrow morning!

ac·ro·nym - n. A word formed from the initial letters of a name, such as WAC for Women's Army Corps (or CHOGM) ...

Am I the only person not to be driving through the newly resurfaced CHOGM streets? Dammit everything looks the same to me!

Ok so some people are missing lectures these 2 days "ghax ghandhom ic-CHOGM Sir", and BOV ATMs are now sporting the CHOGM logo, and it's also become the most popular acronym of 2005 (even more than MLPN?!), but I still want to see these roads. I guess they'll be welcome when the CHOGM BMWs are being driven by the minsters' children.

Eeenie Meenie Minie Mo

I have to express my disappointment at the lack of Swedish men at the wedding... or maybe it's the lack of good-looking Swedish men at the wedding *sigh*

Better stick to the good ol' Maltese eh?!

Till death do us part... natural or unnatural

My ex-colleague is getting married this evening. She's only 20 yet it's the thing that she wants the most. Her fiance` is lovely and they really are the cutest couple. But I still find it quite amazing that she can be so convinced of such a life-altering decision. I guess when you find the person you really do know. Obviously the cynic in me still has major doubts on that one.

I'm looking forward to the wedding though. I'm sure it's going to be quite a spectacular affair and seeing as her almost-husband is Swedish, I'm hoping that there will be beautiful Swedish men present :) Weddings are the perfect pulling places *lol*

The medium is the message

Found it today's The Times
Personal
In grateful acknowledgment to God for favours received through the intercession of St Jude.
O Holy St Jude, apostle and martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke you, special patron in time of need, to you I have recourse from the depths of my heart and humbly beg you whom God has given such great power, to come to my assistance. Help me now in my present and urgent need and grant my earnest petition. In return I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. Three Our Fathers, Hail Marys and Glorias. St Jude, pray for us and all who honour and invoke your aid. Amen. I have had my request granted.

I read something like this and ask myself why someone would thank God on a form of print media. I'm sure God would have been just as satisfied had he/she closed her eyes, bowed his/her head and said a prayer in thanks. What is the need to go public with such personal issues; 1) his/her religious beliefs and 2) the supposed grant from above of his/her request.

So if this request wasn't granted what would this person have done. Been mad at God for ignoring him/her, or accepted the fact that maybe it 'wasn't God's will'?

Apparentely there's a resurgence in people's religious beliefs all over the world. Probably people just figure that they may as well try and have faith in something bigger than themselves cos the world isn't doing much good working alone. I just hope that God reads 'The Times'.

Why work when you can attend uni?

http://timesofmalta.com/core/article.php?id=204819

Finally, a letter stating the obvious. Of course stipends are ridiculous, especially in an economy like ours. With so many ways to cheat the system did they really believe that the Smart card was the solution to stop students spending this money on things which are not 'academically-oriented'.

Maybe this might sound pedantic because I've completed my first degree and therefore received all the grants that were offered; however, whilst at uni (and 6th form as the case may be) I was working in order to maintain myself and enjoy a certain quality of life. Now that I'm back at uni getting my M.A. Qual sorted I am not entitled to any sort of stipend, although the scrawny kid next to me is getting paid to sit there and listen to the same lecture that I am listening to but that's another matter; so what do people such as myself do? We work!

Maybe it would be unwise to go cold-turkey on the stipend system, and the introductory grant should be retained for a while, but that should also be phased out eventually. Why are we throwing all this money at 18-year-olds when it is so evidently needed in order to upgrade the facilities that the university and JC supposedly offer. Sports? Hah, that's a joke! The outdoor tennis court and basketball court and usually flooded and inaccessible, which is a shame. Unfortunately as everything else, it all boils down to politics, and no government has the balls to do something drastic like this, despite the obvious benefits.

Roads are for cars; Pavements are for pedestrians

Few things irritate me more than people walking in the middle of the road, or towards the side but still in the way of oncoming traffic. I find it incredibly selfish, and then they give you bad looks when you pass by within a centimetre of them! If you were walking where you were meant to be walking I wouldn't have had to come so close to you. It's not like I want to anyway. Unfortunately for them, and in a legalistic way for me too, I would have no problem hitting somebody if they were in my way. Not injuring them of course, but just knocking them slightly. It wouldn't affect me in any way... which either makes me insensitive or someone with murderous intentions (possibly both on certain days). Obviously if that had to happen there would be serious repurcussions and... the driver would get it! Because it is never the fault of the pedestrian! I wanted to walk in the middle of the road because there's more space. Gah! I wonder if there are laws about this...
And, whilst I'm on a rant, if you don't know how to park, do NOT go to university with your car. Parking is an important aspect of driving, and you need to be able to park in a tight space on a hill with a car waiting behind you, before you should even consider entering university with a car. The amount of wasted space is incredible because of imbeciles who leave half a car-space between their bonnet and the bumper of the car in front of them, just so they can get out easily. Gah! Amateurs...
